INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Let’s Grow Together

Growing Stronger Garden Clubs Through Membership & Leadership

An interactive learning experience that transforms a live membership and leadership workshop into a self-directed digital experience.

Role: Learning Experience Designer & Developer
Tools: Articulate Storyline 360 • Canva
Audience: Garden club members and leaders
Focus: Membership • Engagement • Leadership Development

The Challenge

Garden clubs depend on a steady cycle of new members, meaningful involvement, and emerging leadership. Yet attracting people is only the beginning. Clubs also need to create conditions that help visitors feel welcome, become involved, develop a sense of ownership, and eventually invest in the organization.

The original Let’s Grow Together workshop addressed these challenges through live discussion, collaborative activities, and a practical four-stage membership framework: Invite Me, Include Me, Involve Me, and Invest in Me.

The design challenge was to translate that highly participatory experience into a self-directed format without simply turning the workshop presentation into a click-through slide deck.

Designing for Exploration
Rather than presenting the membership framework as a linear sequence of information, I built opportunities for learners to explore. Interactive member profiles and the Four Pots allow learners to make connections between individual needs and the conditions that support long-term engagement.

Turning the Framework into Practice
Learners categorize membership strategies by dragging them to the appropriate stage of the framework. Customized feedback and retry behavior allow learners to reconsider their choices and reinforce the distinctions among the four stages.

THE DESIGN APPROACH

From the live workshop
Participants contributed strategies throughout the session, creating a shared collection of ideas for strengthening their clubs.

Turning Concepts into Actions
Each stage of the framework was translated into concrete behaviors. Layered interactions, a follow-up timeline, and progressive reveals break larger concepts into smaller decisions and actions learners can apply within their own organizations.

Building Practice into the Experience
The experience moves beyond content review by asking learners to categorize strategies and apply the framework. The Fill Your Pots interaction provides practice with feedback, reinforcing the distinctions among Invite, Include, Involve, and Invest.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE:
Preserve what made the live workshop effective—choice, participation, reflection, and application—rather than simply recreating the presentation digitally.

BUILDING THE INTERACTION

From Design Decisions to Learner Interaction

The experience uses layers, states, triggers, conditional navigation, and feedback to create interactions that respond to learner choices rather than simply advance through content.

Encouraging Exploration Before Progression
Learners explore four potential-member profiles before continuing. Visited states track each interaction, while conditional triggers keep navigation unavailable until all four profiles have been explored.

Layering Information Without Overloading the Screen
A clickable follow-up timeline lets learners explore what effective engagement can look like after a first meeting. Slide layers reveal information at each point while preserving the timeline as a visual anchor, allowing learners to move among steps without leaving the interaction.

Outcome & Reflection

The finished experience transforms a collaborative, discussion-based workshop into a reusable self-directed learning experience while preserving the elements that made the original effective: exploration, participation, reflection, and application.

Translating, Not Replicating
The goal was not to reproduce the original workshop slide by slide. Instead, the digital experience reorganizes the content around learner choices and interactions, allowing participants to explore the membership framework and consider how individual strategies support engagement over time.

Designing Interaction with Purpose
Each interaction serves a learning purpose—from exploring potential-member perspectives to examining follow-up strategies and categorizing actions within the Four Pots framework. Interactivity supports the learning rather than functioning as decoration.

Opportunities for Iteration
A future iteration would include usability testing with representative learners to observe navigation patterns, identify points of confusion, and refine feedback and interaction design based on learner behavior.
